Zelniky (Cabbage Filling)

Ingredients

  • 1 cabbage
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • butter
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pepper

Directions

  1. Clean cabbage (4 lb) and wash well.
  2. Chop finely.
  3. Add salt and let stand for at least 1/2 hour.
  4. Press out the excess juice.
  5. Then, steam until soft.
  6. Lightly brown flour in butter about the size of a hens egg.
  7. Add water, the cabbage, sugar, and pepper.
  8. Flatten kolache buns.
  9. Fill with cabbage filling and punch edges together at the top.
  10. Bake as you would kolaches, with pinched side down.
