Spiced Grape Jelly

Ingredients

  • 1 peck wild grapes, picked over, washed, drained and stemmed
  • 1 quart vinegar
  • 1/4 cup whole cloves
  • 1/4 cup cinnamon, sticks
  • 6 pound granulated sugar, or 3 quarts

Directions

  1. Heat the grapes, vinegar, cloves and cinnamon to the boiling-point, gradually, and let simmer till the grapes are soft.
  2. Strain through a double thickness of cheese-cloth or jelly-bag; return to preserving kettle, again bring to boiling-point and let simmer 20 minutes.
  3. Add the sugar which has been heated; let simmer 5 minutes, or until it jellies, and pour into glasses.
  4. Place in a sunny window and let stand 24 hours.
  5. Cover and keep in a cool, dry place.
