Marble Cake

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup molasses, for dark part
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder, for dark part
  • 1/2 cup milk, for dark part
  • 1 teaspoon powdered cinnamon, for dark part
  • 2 egg yolks, for dark part
  • 1/2 teaspoon powdered cloves, for dark part
  • 1 cup flour, for dark part
  • 1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg, for dark part
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, for dark part
  • 1/2 cup milk, for light part
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, for light part
  • 1 cup flour, for light part
  • 2 egg whites, beaten stiff for light part
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder, for light part

Directions

  1. Cream sugar and butter and divide into two parts, half for light and half for dark.
  2. To one half add molasses, baking powder, milk, cinnamon, egg yolks, cloves, flour, nutmeg and vanilla.
  3. Mix this together thoroughly and set aside while the light part is being mixed.
  4. To the other half of the butter and sugar add milk, vanilla, flour, egg whites, and baking powder.
  5. Put large spoonfuls of light and dark batter, alternating, in a loaf cake pan well fitted with waxed paper, until the pan is two-thirds full.
  6. Bake thirty-five minutes in a moderate oven.
