White Bread

Yield: 6 1 1/2 pound loaves

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Dissolve yeast in the 1/4 cup lukewarm water.
  2. Measure shortening, salt and sugar into howl and add boiling water.
  3. Add milk and when mixture is lukewarm, add the yeast.
  4. Sift flour, then measure.
  5. Add about half the flour and heat very thoroughly.
  6. Add remaining flour to make a stiff dough.
  7. Knead until smooth and elastic.
  8. Put into a greased bowl and cover.
  9. Let rise until doubled in bulk, about 2 hours.
  10. Knead again.
  11. Shape into bread pans.
  12. Let rise again until doubled in bulk.
  13. Bake in a hot oven (400f) for 45 minutes.
