Lebkuchen

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cup flour
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 pound citron, chopped fine
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves, ground
  • 1/2 pound almonds, chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar

Directions

  1. Sift the flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and cream of tartar.
  2. Mix the sugar and beaten eggs thoroughly.
  3. Combine with the flour mixture, add citron and the almonds.
  4. Roll out on floured board, 1/4 inch thick.
  5. Place on a greased cookie sheet and bake in moderate oven (350f) for 15 minutes.
  6. Cut into squares or diamonds while still warm.
  7. Ice thinly with plain white or lemon frosting.
  8. This is an old recipe for an oldtime christmas favorite.
