Directions

  1. Set oven for moderate, 350f.
  2. Mix and sift first 5 ingredients.
  3. Sift again twice; return to sifter.
  4. Beat shortening until creamy.
  5. Add 1 cup sugar gradually, continuing to beat.
  6. Beat in egg and molasses.
  7. Sift about 1/4 of the flour mixture over the molasses mixture; stir to blend well.
  8. Repeat until all flour mixture is added.
  9. Form teaspoons of dough into small balls by rolling lightly between palms of hands.
  10. Roll balls in extra sugar.
  11. Place about 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets.
  12. Bake 12 minutes or until tops are slightly rounded and crackly.
  13. Cool on racks.
