Chocolate Cake

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 quart flour, (1 1/2 pounds)
  • 1 2/3 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/8 cup shortening, (9 ounces)
  • 2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 quart sugar, (2 pounds)
  • 1 1/2 cup eggs
  • 1/2 pound bitter chocolate
  • 1 1/4 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 1/4 cup water

Directions

  1. Sift flour, then measure.
  2. Resift with baking powder, soda and salt.
  3. Cream shortening and vanilla thoroughly.
  4. Add sugar gradually and continue creaming until light and fluffy.
  5. Beat in the eggs.
  6. Add chocolate that has been melted over hot water.
  7. Add dry ingredients and diluted milk alternately, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
  8. Pour into greased layer cake pans and bake in a moderate oven (375f) about 25 minutes.
