Nut Bread Sandwiches

Ingredients

  • 2 cup graham flour
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1 cup white flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup nut meats, cut fine
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 cup milk

Directions

  1. When the nut bread is one day old, cut in very thin slices.
  2. Cream the butter and spread one piece of bread carefully with butter.
  3. Place another piece on the top.
  4. Press firmly.
  5. Make all the sandwiches in this way.
  6. Allow to stand in a cool, damp place for one hour.
  7. Make a paper hatchet pattern.
  8. Lay the pattern on top of each sandwich and with a sharp knife, trace around the pattern.
  9. Cut through carefully and the sandwiches will resemble hatchets.
  10. This is not difficult to do and is very effective.
  11. Washington’s birthday sandwiches 1 loaf of white bread one day old 8 t-butter 2 yards each of red, white and blue ribbon cut the bread very thin with a sharp knife.
  12. Remove ali crusts.
  13. Place a damp cloth around the prepared slices when very moist, and tender.
  14. Spread with butter which has been creamed with a fork until soft.
  15. Roll the sandwiches up carefully like a roll of paper.
  16. Cut the ribbon into six-inch strips, and tie around the sandwiches.
  17. Place in a bread box to keep moist.
  18. Pile on a plate in log cabin fashion.
