Chlebove Knedliky (Cubed Bread Dumplings)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Beat eggs.
  2. Add the milk, salt, and enough flour to make a thick dough.
  3. Beat with a large wooden spoon until smooth.
  4. Let stand a few minutes.
  5. Cut bread into cubes and fry until golden brown in a little butter.
  6. Cool and add to the dough.
  7. Wet hands and form the dough into an oval shape (somewhat like a football).
  8. Put into a large kettle of boiling water.
  9. Cover and continue boiling.
  10. After ten minutes, remove the lid and carefully pry the dough loose from the bottom of the kettle.
  11. Cover and continue boiling for about 20 to 30 minutes.
  12. Remove from water.
  13. Using a thread, cut into 3/4 inch slices.
  14. If the center appears raw, it may be returned to the boiling water for another few minutes.
  15. If desired, (especially with pork roast, sauerkraut, or sweet sour cabbage) pour melted butter on each slice.
