Chleb Psenicny (White Bread)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Soften yeast in warm water.
  2. Scald milk and cool.
  3. Combine yeast mixture, milk, sugar, salt, shortening, and half the flour.
  4. Mix with spoon until smooth.
  5. Let set for 1/2 hour.
  6. Then add remaining flour and knead until smooth and elastic.
  7. Let rise in warm place until doubled in bulk (about 1 1/2 hours).
  8. Punch down.
  9. Let rise again until almost doubled in bulk (about 30 minutes).
  10. Shape into 2 loaves.
  11. Place in greased bread pans.
  12. Let rise about 1 hour.
  13. Bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes.
  14. Reduce to 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until done.
  15. The loaves are done when they shrink from the side of the pan and give a hollow sound when tapped on the bottom or side.
  16. Remove from pans and let cool on wire rack.
  17. Brush the crust with grease.
